Their situation was exactly that oi the minority in Ireland at the present time, who truly say that so long as Ireland is united to Britain they are safe, but the moment the tie is cut and they pass under the government of a Home Rule Legislaturs they will be, as a people, abandoned to their enemies. The Protestants of Quebec, forty-five years ago, used exactly the same language as is today heard in Ulster. Not all, for there were othcr voices, coming from those who professed to be superior to pre judice, who scouted the idea of the Papacy being hostile to British rights, declaring the alarm was raised by those who were con juring a ghost of the past to defeat a wise and desirable legislative measure. They ex pressed entire confidence in the majority. As serting Protestants would be as secure in their rights under thom as in the Union with Ontario. They laughed at the fears of their cc-religionists as silly prejudices, ask ing them to clasp hands with their Catholic neighbours in working out a glorious destinv for Quebec and all Canada.
