Excerpt from The Interstate Primer and First Reader
In preparing this little reader I have had this especial object in view, good reading; not the mere recognizing of a large number of words, but the grasping of ideas through the printed page.
It is difficult to keep in mind how slowly a child's brain must work in doing this, or through how many processes it must pass. These cabalistic signs mean no more to the child than Sanskrit does to us, and it rests upon us, as teachers, to open this great field to the unfolding mind.
With these ideas in view, I have made the lessons as simple as possible, introducing as few words as I could in each new lesson and still keep a strong association with the picture.
