OF the Lectures contained in this volume I have merely to say, that they were delivered at intervals, during the last few years, on be half of Literary Institutes, in the town of St John's, Newfoundland. Composed originally without any view to publication, amid the pressure of professional duties, and intended to meet the tastes of popular audiences, they are now, after a hasty revision, sent to the press. These circumstances may serve to ex tenuate some of their faults and imperfections; and, at the same time, will account for the method adopted in the treatment of the differ.
