Buoni inoltre per indole quasi sempre, leali come soldati, costumati più degli altri anche nei tempi della maggior corruttela, erano naturalmente l'amore dei sudditi,i quali con soddisfazione diceva no: poche famiglie in Europa aver regnato da più remoto tempo di quella che fatto avesse la Sabauda, e nella lunga serie di que'principi non contarsi un tiran no. Talvolta l'amore popolare esprimevasi col gridar santo un trapassato: 'ma il popolo piemontese diè so vente questa testimonianza di stima ai suoi principi, e volle venerare sugli altari quelli che aveva amati sul trono. A nessuna famiglia regnante toccò cosi frequen temente questa religiosa apoteosi, questo attestato di de vozione popolare.
