L'interprétation, qui voit dans Kant un métaphysicien à tendances spinozistes ou panthéistes, est aussi ancienne que la Critique de la raison pure elle-même. En etîet, quatre ans après l'apparition de cet ouvrage, c'est-à-dire en 1875, un critique anonyme signant Sg publia dans la Bibliothèque générale allemande' un compte rendu du livre de Schultz, Eclaircissement sur la Critique de [a raison pure, dans lequel il admettait que, par sa Cri tique, Kant avait visé la construction d'une Métaphysique nouvelle, mais où il se demandait si, en dernière analyse, cette Métaphysique ne consistait pas dans le spinozisme. Et ce fut d'actualité car juste' à ce moment-là éclata la fameuse querelle Jacobi - Mendelssohn, dans laquelle J acobi faisait de Lessing un disciple avoué de Spinoza, tandis que Mendelssohn soutenait le contraire.
