Déjà un savant architecte qui venait de l'orient, M. Albert Lenoir, avait remarqué en passant et signalé depuis, dans un cours public, la physionomie éminemment byzantine des églises de Cahors et de Souline. Il mettait sur la même ligne l'église de saint-étienne de Périgueux, qu'il ne connaissait que par une mauvaise gravure. Des recherches patientes, poursuivies pendant dix années, nous ont successivement fait constater l'existence de plus de quarante monuments, tous empreints a des degrés différents dtî même style, tous de la même famille. Mais le plus ancien, le plus vaste, le plus complet, le plus curieux de tous, c'est l'ancienne abbaye de saint-front, aujourd'hui cathédrale de Périgueux.
