Le compagnonnage est aujourd'hui presque ignoré du public, et son nom même s'efface peu a peu du souvenir du peuple. Sauf dans trois ou quatre corporations où, sous l'influence de causes diverses, il a pu se perpétuer jusqu'à nos jours et conserver quelques vestiges de son ancienne in?uence, le compagnonnage est mort ou se meurt. Il ne groupe plus qu'un nombre presque insigni fiant d'adhérents. Les sources de son recrutement sont taries. Ses coutumes, jadis si invariablement gardées, ses règlements, véritable code de la vie professionnelle d'au trefois, ses rites qui furent entourés d'un si religieux res pect, tout cela se dissout peu a peu, se fond lentement et s'évanouit déjà plus qu'à demi dans la nuit du passé. C'est à peine si quelques rameaux verdoient encore au sommet de l'arbre antique dont la sève se retire et dont le tronc creux et desséché ne résistera plus longtemps aux orages.
