Excerpt from Twenty-Seven Specimen Pages Arranged to Show Types Suitable for Book Printing: Set Up From the Last Chapters of Moby Dick
The pages shown here are more or less standard, and suitable for most classes of work. The pages of Imprint and Long Primer Modern, for example, are admirable for scientific books: Baskerville, Fournier and Gaston will be found to satisfy most general requirements - novels, belles-lettres, bio graphies, and so on. Garamond and Centaur, needing some what careful handling, are recommended for use in books that deserve a more exquisite touch than is called for by the normal run of publications. They need very careful setting, and very careful machining, and even more careful attention paid to a choice of paper. Old Style French and Old Style Italian have their special uses, which the publisher himself will in stantly recognise: they are quite definitely not suited for all books. Their misuse has completely spoiled too many other wise excellent volumes.
