Le procédé le plus direct serait d'éliminer de ces équations de condition autant de variations qu'il y a d'équations, et les substituer ensuite dans l'équa tion précédente; mais cette élimination étant souvent très pénible ou même im pratiquable, je me servirai de la méthode employée par Lagrange dans le calcul des fonctions. La voici: on multiplie la variation de toute équation de condi tion par une quantité indéterminée, qui est en général une fonction de x, y et z et on ajoute le produit à l'expression sous le signe d'intégration. Soit donc 622: O, ôv'=0, dv 0, etc. Les variations de ces équations de condition et J., etc. Des quantités indéterminées, et l'on aura.
