Il ne nous est pas possible d'utiliser a cette fin les maté riaux que nous avions naguère réunis, avant que le hasard des carrières administratives nous eût pour longtemps éloigné de notre province natale. Mais en publiant les notes autrefois recueillies, nous pensons faciliter à autrui l'étude si attachante à laquelle nous devons renoncer. Quelques indica tions sommaires sur les sources consultées et sur la méthode suivie permettront peut - être de faire servir notre présent travail à une oeuvre plus complète et plus achevée.
