Excerpt from Dixon's Address to the Jury in Defence of Freedom of Speech, Considered the Most Powerful Address Ever Delivered in the Courts of Manitoba, and Judge Galt's Charge to the Jury in Rex V. Dixon
However, you are seized, gentlemen of the jury, with a great responsibility. You are the last hope of the subject in the matter of his personal liberty, and when all other things have failed he must place his hope in the judgment and con science of the jury. It is fortunate for me that some of my speeches have been preserved and have been put in evidence.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents the closing speech of F. J. Dixon, a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, in his seditious libel trial. Through a detailed analysis of the articles for which he was charged, Dixon argues for the importance of freedom of opinion and the role of jury trial in upholding this freedom. He challenges the government's prosecution, arguing that it is an attempt to suppress dissent and undermine the fundamental principles of British justice. The book provides a rare glimpse into the legal and political struggles of the early 20th century in Canada, exploring the tension between the government's desire for order and the individual's right to express their views. Ultimately, Dixon's trial and his eloquent defense of liberty of opinion serve as a reminder of the fragility of democratic values and the need for vigilance in their defense.
