Dass der Versuch, der hier unternommen worden ist, Mängel hat, darüber kann ich mich am wenigsten täuschen; eine relativ vollkommene Darstellung dürfen wir immer noch von dem grossen Meister erwarten, der dazu wie kein zweiter der Lebenden befähigt ist. Doch auch so darf ich hoffen, dass meine Arbeit nicht ganz wertlos sein wird, und ich glaube die Bitte aussprechen zu dürfen, dass mich die engeren Fachgenossen durch Mitteilung ihrer Wahrneh mungen in den Stand setzen mögen, schon in den folgenden Abteilungen etwaige Fehler und Irrtümer zu berichtigen und so das Buch für den Gebrauch möglichst qerlassig zu machen.
Die Quellenangaben habe ich so ziemlich alle selbst nachgeschlagen und im Anschluss an die besseren Textes redaktionen so genau gegeben, als dies möglich war; die Litteratur, welche die Kenntnis wirklich fördern kann, hoffe ich vollständig verzeichnet zu haben; freilich werden gerade hierüber die Urteile auseinandergehen, da die Ent scheidung über den Wert einer Untersuchung häufig ver schieden ausfallen wird.
