Le premier travail à faire était de découvrir l'endroit où ces documents étaient en dépôt, et puis de choisir ceux que l'on devait faire transcrire à cause de l'intérêt qu'ils pouvaient avoir pour le Canada. Le choix des pièces et la copie ne peuvent se faire que lentement, attendu qu'il n'y a que des hommes experts qui puissent les diriger.
En transcrivant des documents originaux pour les Archives, il est de toute nécessité que les copies soient examinées avec soin et certifiées, si l'on veut que confiance leur soit donnée. L'on ne peut se reposer, pour cette vérification, que sur des hommes d'une expérience éprouvée. C'est la règle qui a été adoptée par le gouvernement pour tous les travaux de recherches, de copie et de collation qui seront faits à l'avenir. Si, donc, le bureau des Archives canadiennes ne possède pas encore la cepie de tous les documents signalés dans les rapports, depuis trente sept ans, ceux-ci contiennent cependant des indications suffi santes pour que l'on puisse trouver les dépôts où ils sont conser vês et les travailleurs peuvent de la sorte poursuivre eux - mêmes leurs recherches au besoin.
