Excerpt from The Wail of the Vatican: A Poem
For the general treatment of his subject the au thor hopes, while expressing himself on the vital topics before him with all plainness, he has never theless steered clear of the partisan. The general subject is scarcely popular in these days, and it is therefore the more needful to avoid the additional offence of conventional hard words. He hopes how ever that in abstaining from such usages he has consulted rather his own temper than the calculating consideration now referred to.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a historical analysis of Pope Pius IX's failed attempt to halt the progress of the Austro-Sardinian War of 1859. The author paints a vivid picture of the political and religious landscape of mid-19th century Europe. Pius IX, a staunch supporter of Austria, implored Napoleon III to spare the Habsburg monarchy. The author highlights the broader context of the Reformation, the rise of nation-states, and the increasing secularization of European society, arguing that these factors contributed to the decline of papal influence and the rise of nationalism. Ultimately, the book emphasizes the significance of this conflict as a turning point in European history, marking the beginning of a new era characterized by the decline of religious authority and the rise of nation-states.
