Excerpt from The Confession of John Whitlock, Late Preacher of the Gospel
I have been a preacher of the gospel for forty years, but this day I lay down my Bible and hymn book, and shall take them up no more, except for private consolation.
The people have not accepted the reli gion I have taught, and this has alarmed and distressed me so much that I will no longer be held responsible save for my own conduct, and for good example to my neighbors and friends.

The author grapples with the dissonance between the faith he taught and his personal journey, exposing the hypocrisy and dogma that undermines the church's teachings. The author details his reasons for abandoning his role, citing a lack of revelation and growth in grace, arguing that the church's insistence on these doctrines has alienated many. Through personal anecdotes and historical examples, he questions the long-held belief in hell and argues for the existence of natural punishment and reward. He challenges the efficacy of fear-based preaching and emphasizes the importance of conscience and ethical behavior. The book delves deeply into the nature of sin, punishment, and morality, challenging readers to re-examine their beliefs and embrace a practical, compassionate approach to religion. It sheds light on the complexities of religious experience and advocates for a faith rooted in reason, understanding, and personal experience.
