Labor Relations: Development, Structure, Processes by John Fossum presents the history and development of labor relations, the structure and internal politics of union organizations, union organizing and union avoidance, bargaining structures and issues, and the process of negotiations and contract administration. As a result of decreasing union membership over the last twenty years, more material in the book addresses employee relations in nonunion organizations, and includes examples of both cooperative and adversarial relationships.

The 8th Edition features an increased emphasis on globalization's influence on organizing and bargaining.
There is an expanded treatment of gainsharing programs, which are programs established to reward production workers for productivity improvements. Performance is measured during some "usual" base period and then improvements in labor productivity which occur in the future receive rewards.
There is additional discussion of labor relations in the airline industry under the Railway Labor Act.
The bargaining exercise has been updated to incorporate likely changes negotiated three years ago. There are a new set of demands for this round and the cost and employment figures have been updated.
The incorporation of recent research results and economic data has always been a hallmark of this market-leading text. The most important revisions reflecting research results has to do with how negotiations are conducted - especially perceptions of the parties in negotiating and the role-playing that goes on during negotiations - particularly since a great deal of it is done in front of others.
John Fossum received his PhD from Michigan State University. He is an established author in the labor relations/personnel area. He is currently a full professor and the director of the Industrial Relations Center at the University of Minnesota.
