"Sourcebook for Research in Music", essentially a bibliography of bibliographies, is designed to aid students and scholars in keeping abreast of the vast proliferation of resource materials. The opening chapter contains valuable introductory material: definitions of common bibliographical terms in English and their equivalents in German and French, and the plan of the Library of Congress music classification system. The authors provide information on basic bibliographical tools, dictionaries and encyclopedias, and research journals. Other sections are concerned with music history, composers' biographies, and editions of music; and there are extensive bibliographies on musicology, ethnomusicology, performance practice, music theory, music education, African American music, American music, dance, jazz, and women in music. Each section is preceded by comments on the scope and usefulness of specific items in the listings that follow, often singling out those of particular importance or pointing out the differences between reference works with similar titles. "Sourcebook for Research in Music" is a valuable classroom text, for undergraduates as well as graduates, and a basic guide for individual music researchers, librarians, students, performing and teaching musicians, and nonprofessionals.

The review of the first edition of this book (CH, Apr'94, 31-4107) described it as more a graduate music course list than as a guide to reference sources. That description also applies to the new edition, which includes about 20 percent more titles than its predecessor and has been updated to catch a number of revised editions. Crabtree and Foster (both, formerly, Univ. of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music) give more attention in this new edition to areas of timely interest, such as gender, therapy, specific ethnic musics, copyright, recordings, and arts management. More online databases are listed, interspersed with the printed sources (the section Computer Aids to Music Research, however, is largely unchanged). More analytics appear under their collective titles, so as to make the book all the more useful for scanning and as an adjunct to academic lectures. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-level undergraduates through researchers/faculty. -D.W. Krummel, emeritus, University of Illinois at Urban, CHOICE "This essential, basic reference source will find its best use by the undergraduate and non-major student." -American Reference Books Annual 2007
Phillip D. Crabtree and Donald H. Foster are both retired faculty members at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Allen Scott is Associate Professor of Music History at Oklahoma State University.
