A evocative combination of photos & essays -- A great gift!
Perhaps the first attempt to assess this tumultuous century that is drawing to a close, "Imagining the Twentieth Century" is an evocative combination of black-and-white photographs and essays. Part collective scrapbook, part scholarly study, the book is an effort to muse on the changes, both good and bad, that the 20th century witnessed.
"Imagining" grew out of a seminar in which 17 University of Illinois history professors examined the century from a wide range of perspectives. That grew into a popular undergraduate course that will continue to be offered yearly through the end of the 20th century. Finally, the book was compiled, with each faculty member contributing several essays, each of which is accompanied by striking photographs, not neccesarily of world events or famous people, but photos that evoke strong memories nonetheless.
The book will find resonance with many readers, all of whom have lived through part of the times illustrated and discussed in the book. A great gift book!! END
