About the Author

Louis R. Harlan is Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Maryland and is the author of a highly acclaimed two-volume biography of Booker T. Washington. Booker T. Washington: The Making of a Black Leader, 1856-1901, was awarded a Bancroft Prize and Booker T. Washington: The Wizard of Tuskegee, 1901-1915, received the Pulitzer and Bancroft Prizes, as well as the Beveridge Award from the American Historical Association. Raymond W. Smock, is Historian of the U.S. House of Representatives and the director of the Office for the Bicentennial of the House. He is a former president of the Association for Documentary Editing and was a member of the history faculty at the University of Maryland. Smock is the editor of Booker T. Washington: Essays of Louis R. Harlan and a past recipient of the Philip M. Hamer Award of the Society of American Archivists.
