Excerpt from Annotations on the Gospel According to St. Matthew, Vol. 1: Matthew I-XV
The Lutheran Church was saved, however, from the full consequences of the later development by two cir cumstances. One was the expository mode of preaching that prevailed, based generally upon the pericopes of the Church Year. That this mode is capable of abuse from the temptation afforded by a vast mass of material made ready for the homiletical purposes of the preacher, is un doubtedly true. Any mode of preaching, that is not accompanied by constantly fresh study of the Holy Script ures, and the stimulus of new discoveries, on the part of the preacher, of riches hitherto hidden from him in the Divine Word, must become lifeless and mechanical. Never theless where the pericopes are followed, or other lessons from the Scriptures are explained according to an estab lished order, the mind of the people is brought in a peculiar way, to the sources of spiritual life.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book aims to explicate the Lutheran perspective on Christianity, placing a specific focus on the New Testament. First published in the 19th century, this book has long been referenced as an authority on the Lutheran interpretation of the Christian scriptures. Through close examination of the scriptures themselves and meticulous textual comparison with the Old Testament, the author crafts an accessible and engaging exposition of each passage in the New Testament. This book also demonstrates the role of Lutheranism as a specific form of Christian life and doctrine, arguing that it is not restricted to the members of the Lutheran Church. The author includes a wealth of additional information in the extensive annotations; these draw from a host of scholars and historical and religious texts.
