N on crediam fondato questo giudizio; eppure siam d'av viso, poche volte esser occorso ciò che vedism accadere pel Guicciardini. Chi di lui parla o scrive, non dico già, come si faceva nell'altro secolo o nel seicento, ma al modo di dieci anni sono, commette un' ingiustizia solenne. Se la voce nostra fosse ascoltata, a coloro, che si occupano nello scriver istorie della letteratura italiana, vorremmo dare per consiglio di riformare tutti i giudizi finora reci tati intorno al Guicciardini, mediante un' attenta lettura di.tntte queste Opere, venute alla luce di recente. Se non si trattasse che d' un epistolario, sebbene anche alle let tere, famigliari o non, debba conferirei grande importanza, non ci sarebbe da levare molto rumore; e forse caso tanto straordinario il veder pubblicate lettere di un grande? Ma qui, oltre a buon numero di lettere gravissime, ci abbiamo veri e proprii trattati di civile sapienza, ci abbiamo una storia fiorentina e dialoghi e discorsi politici e tante altre scritture, che ci rappresentano il Guicciardini secondo un aspetto assai diverso da quello giusta il quale lo si è fin ora considerato.
