Excerpt from The Master of Millions: A Novel
A young man, scarce twenty-three years Of age, care fully wrapped ia a riding cloak, dashed rapidly across St. Andrew's Square and sought the Shadows of a narrow street. He plunged into a tortuous labyrinth of lanes and alleys and reached a gloomy space bordered on two sides by tall, dreary buildings, as forbidding and uncomfort able as stone could make them, and bounded in the rear by a wall which led to another thoroughfare on a higher level, and which was reached by a flight of steps well worn by the busy feet of more than one generation of happy, dirty children.
