Excerpt from Technology Transfer Under Varying Rates of Knowledge Generation
The scientists and engineers in this study work in a u.s. Government research facility. The original sample was selected from three departments at the facility on the basis of technical area of expertise. The original objective of the research was to explain the introduction of a formal, computerized, on-line information retrieval system and the effect of this introduction on the informal information gathering techniques of the people in the organization. The sample was therefore chosen to be those people for whom the data bases on the information retrieval system would be useful.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book investigates the changing role of the technological gatekeeper in environments with varying rates of knowledge generation. The gatekeeper is a type of information specialist who serves as a conduit of information, selecting and transmitting ideas and theories from the wider world to their particular research environment. As technological knowledge evolves at different rates, the author argues the gatekeeper's existence and function are closely linked to the pace of knowledge innovation within their field, leading to them being of lesser importance in some fields, and more significant in fast-changing, dynamic disciplines. Drawing on case studies and interviews, this book will be of particular interest to scholars and professionals interested in the sociology of innovation and science, or the role and impact of communication and information sharing within evolving research fields. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
