Les Nécrophores à 'e'tat parfait, se nourrissent aussi de substance animale putréfiée, mais ils la trouvent partout et ne se donnent la peine de l'enterrer que pour la soustraire à d'autres insectes également avides de la même proie tels que les Dermestes, les Bisters; dont nous avons déjà parlé et les Silphes qui don nent leur nom à toute cette famille. Semblables dans leurs habitudes aux Dermestes et aux Bisters, les Sil phes n'enterrent pas les charognes; ils se contentent de pondre leurs oeufs au dessous et les larves qui en proviennent y restent jusqu'à leur transformation. Aussi les larves des Silphes sont-elles plus fréquentes 'que celles des Nécrophores, qui sortent rarement de leur retraite et dont rien-me fait soupçonner la pré sence dans le sein de la terre.
