This is, strictly speaking, his first volume of sermons, though that published in 1834 is marked the first, from its relation to the subsequent series. In after his return from Italy, he became involved in a. Very serious altercation with the Rationalists at Halle, a slight allusion to which is found in Bib. Rep., vol. I.
