Quelques chartes lapidaires ont été conservées qui datent du moyen âge, antérieures pourtant au treizième siècle. En Orient, les pierres précieuses même recevaient des inscriptions (fig. 3 à le Cabinet des Ant1ques, à la Bibliothèque nationale, possède un cône de basalte trouvé dans l'euphrate et couvert de caractères.
