Excerpt from The Field and the Fruit: A Memorial of Twenty-Five Years' Ministry With the Church of the Redeemer, Minneapolis
The brightest candles set in a sermon are frequently its illustrations borrowed from current events; and in reviewing my manuscripts I found that many of these lights had gone out, leaving certain spaces here and there darker than usual; that even the candle sticks were missing. I cannot in every case hope to have restored these extinguished helps. Then, too, sermons which have cooled off from their pulpit-heat and glow are as stone compared with living flesh.
