Excerpt from Pastoral Address by the Rev. J. M. Macleod: Edin, and Glas, Minister of St. Andrew's Church, (Church of Scotland,) Glencoe Ontario
Permit me to address to you a few earnest words in the spirit of tenderness and affection. Entered, as we are, on the first day of a New Year, it' is most becoming that we who profess our faith, both in God's infinite love and in His wise providence, should call upon our souls to bless His Holy name, and to magnify His goodness, for all His gracious dealings with us during the year that has just expired. It is, indeed, impossible to give a retrospective view Of the past, without feeling deeply sensible Off the numerous benefits of which we have been daily the unworthy and ungrateful recipients. Nor can we be blind to the fact [that the tender mercies of our God, which extend over all His works, loudly demand the most grateful and unqualified recognition on our part. And if we are alive to our unbounded obligation to Him in whom we live, and move, and have our being - who is at once the mighty guardian of the helpless, the unceasing friend of the needy, the benefactor and powerful preserver of all - our thoughts will spontaneously revert to the unmerited goodness which He has caused to pass before us, the impressions of which ought to be deep and per manent.
