The year 1605 marked the pivotal start of the electing of ordinary mayors in the city, and the document is the record of these elections and power shifts within the city at the time. It lays bare the political and social contours of the period, revealing the tensions between the city's leaders and the viceroy. The account provides a rich exploration of power dynamics between authorities, from the king, to the viceroy, to the judges and local leaders. The transcript also shows the complex and delicate relationship between the recently established colonial authorities and the city's indigenous past, showcasing the extent of Spanish influence and control over the native inhabitants and their ways of life. It's a rich and detailed snapshot into the history of Mexico City and a vital source of information for scholars and laypeople alike. It offers an authentic record of how Mexican city life was governed during the early Spanish viceroyalty.
