He was born February 12, 1809, that fruitful year in which were born Glade stone and Darwin. Kentucky was on the frontier then, with primitive, fron' tier conditions in every aspect of life, in church as well as school, both of which were intermittent, supplied by itinerants, sometimes far apart in time.
