On conçoit qu'un maître aussi expérimenté et aussi pru dent se soit gardé d'une enthousiasme prématuré pour un agent dont la puissance pouvait cacher des dangers. Mais sa réserve ne devait pas prendre la forme d'une espèce de condamnation. Cette condamnation singulière, car elle n'était basée que sur des succès, en petit nombre à la vérité, a pesé en France sur l'avenir de l' anesthésie de toute l'auto rité de celui qui l'a formulée. Les élèves de P. Dubois sont restés sous le coup de sa parole et ont acce pté le jugement sans chercher à en appeler à l'expérience. A différentes époques, quelques praticiens français I. Roux. Houzelot, Laborie, etc., ont tenté de stériles efforts pour donner à l'0pinion médicale une impulsion plus conforme à l'évidence des faits. Les expériences primitives de P. Dubois n'ont pas été renouvelées, et on a banni de la Clinique l'usage du chloroforme dans les accouchements naturels, pour en limiter l'emploi au cas d'o érations.
