Elle existait avant lui, et elle continue après lui. Seulement, il mesure que s'éveille, timidement encore, le génie national, cette imitation devient plus libre, plus originale. Néan moins, dans la tragédie, et surtout dans la comédie, la France est encore souveraine, et ni le talent des poètes, ni les efforts de la critique, ne parviendront de longtemps à triompher des obstacles que le dé veloppement du théâtre national rencontre dans le morcellement social et politique de l'allemagne.
