À partir de 1866 tout change. La tolérance relative disparaît; elle est remplacée par une persécution tantôt brutale, tantôt légale. Le Juif devient la bête qu'on traque et qu'on meurtrit a plaisir. On déterre des circu laires et des lois surannées, on l'expulse des campagnes, on provoque des émeutes, on le pourchasse jour et nuit, on le noie dans le Danube. Certaines lois restrictives sont votées par les Chambres et certaines mesures autoritaires et tracassoeoes sont décrétées par les ministres, exécutées par leurs sous-ordres. Les Juifs avaient fini de remplir aux yeux des Roumains le rôle d'intermédiaires utiles dans le commerce, d'outil productif et indispensable dans les métiers.
