Excerpt from Grandma Pulls the String: A Comedy in One Act
The Cummings living-room is plain, simple, cozy. In the rear is a door to the hall, from which the staircase mounts. At the right end of the hall is the outer door, at the left the dining-room; neither is visible. At the left of the living-room a fireplace contains gas logs. On the right are two windows, with a large sofa beneath them. There is a round center table, on which stands on electric lamp connected with the electrolier above. Chairs, ornaments, fam ily photographs - the usual accessories. A mirror is over the mantel.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a glimpse into the dynamics of a family during a pivotal moment. The author focuses on a young woman, Julia, and her relationship with William Thornton, a man who is about to leave town after a prolonged courtship. Juliaââ â¢s family, particularly her grandmother, is consumed with the romantic anxieties surrounding the potential engagement, creating a humorous and relatable scenario. The play unfolds amidst a backdrop of classic comedic tropes, mirroring the societal expectations of early 20th-century courtship. The author cleverly explores themes of family dynamics, generational differences, and the clash between tradition and individual desires. Grandma Blessington, the matriarch, represents a bygone era, while Julia embodies the emerging spirit of independent thought and action. The book's strength lies in its ability to depict the delicate balance between societal expectations and individual desires, ultimately reminding us that love, in its truest form, transcends the pressures of convention.
