Excerpt from Dipteren der Insel Madeira
Das Gebiet meiner Sammeltätigkeit beschrankte sich naturlich hauptsachlich, entsprechend der Jahreszeit und der Entwicklung der Flora, auf die Küstengebiete bei Funchal; für diese Zone ist der April besonders wertvoll; gegen Ende des Monats waren die einheimischen Pflanzen auf den Feldern und an der Küste schon im Ab sterben begriffen. Um die Nordseite der Insel kennen zu lernen, habe ich dann noch einen achttägigen Abstecher von Funchal aus gemacht, bei dem das Gebirge in Hohe von rund 1300 'm zu überschreiten ist. Da die Wege steil, treppen und rampenartig mit glatten Basaltsteinen gepflastert sind, so ist das Gehen auf ihnen für einen mit europäischem Schuhwerk ausgerüsteten Menschen bei der Glätte der Steine und bei Regenwetter und nicht ganz ungefährlich. Ich zog es daher vor, die landesübliche Hängematte zu Hilfe zu nehmen, ein ideales, aber recht teures Vergnügen. Die Nordseite der Insel ist von großartiger und origineller vulkanischer Schönheit; das Land ist vielfach bedeckt mit schönen. Wäldern, in denen Eiche und Lorbeer hauptsächlich gedeihen. Die Witterung war während der ganzen Zeit ungünstig, es regnete fast beständig; meine Erkundigungen nach dem voraussichtlich zu erwartenden Wetter ermutigten mich auch nicht, länger zu bleiben; gewöhnlich regnet es auf der Nordseite während der Monate April, Mai bis Mitte Juni; dann tritt heiteres Sommerwetter ein. Um also die Fauna der Insel noch näher kennen zu lernen, müßte man sich im Norden der Insel während der Sommer monate aufhalten; die Hitze ist nicht bedeutend, da stets frischer Seewind weht.
