Mr. Max Mandell, Instructor in Russian in the Univer sity, to whose generosity and kindness all students of the Russian language and literature at New Haven already owe so much, has translated the entire work directly from the original, for the use of the Yale University Dramatic Association; but it should be noted here that in publishing this acting version the Dramatic Association has freely adapted and abridged Mr. Mandell's translation with a view to making it more effective for an American stage performance.
