Little by little men began to part the seamless robe. As the centuries went on, they built the church on one side of the road and the Hotel Dieu on the other. They said that men must go to be purged of their sins in the one and of their diseases in the other: yet Jesus had said, Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? This divorce of the healing of sin from sickness was, however, accompanied by another change. The great saying of Aquinas, that the science of theology, that is, of the word of God, was the only ah solute science, and that all merely human knowledge was simply relative, was forgotten, or relegated to the dust heap of superstition, and the bitter conflict between reve lation and rationalism was entered on.

Jesus had said, in the last words he addressed to hu man ears, And, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world, and no doubt the healing power of the Christ was manifested in a sporadic way all through those centuries, but it was always in a mystic supernatural way, even half fearful to those who experienced it, until at last the yearning for some truer understanding found ex pression in those plaintive words.
