Bernstein, persuadé qu'il était demeuré fidèle à l'esprit de Marx, chercha à expliquer comment le dé veloppement de la doctrine du maître avait pu le conduire à des résultats si contraires aux thèses enseignées dans l'ecole; il fut ainsi amené à se demander si le système primitif de Marx ne renfer merait pas des principes contradictoires, parmi les quels il s'en trouverait qui correspondraient à ses nouvelles conceptions. 11 proposa, en 1899 une théorie sur laquelle l'attention ne me semble pas avoir été assez portée.
