Il eut pour tout horizon la ligne caillouteuse, avec ses traverses de bois et ses quatre rails de fer polis par le frottement des roues, et les fils frémissants de son télégraphe que, pendant les nuits d'hiver, le vent faisait chanter comme une harpe. Sa seule distraction consiste dans le mouvement des trains crachant de la fumée et semant derrière eux, sur le sol ébranlé, des escarbilles brûlantes.
