Begun in 1902, this ongoing project applies shared methodologies across diverse national labs to unify observations of the North Sea, Norwegian Sea, Barents Sea, White Sea, English Channel, and Baltic, to study the circular flow of waters shaping Northern European fisheries. Drawing on biological and physical oceanography, this initial study utilizes seasonal cruises to take soundings and collect data at sea, mapping the presence and distribution of different water masses, marine life, and plankton communities. Later research will investigate the bearing of ocean currents and temperature on the size and reproductive success of fish populations. It will also study the movement of fish stocks by marking and releasing them and then tracking their movements. This coordinated study assembles a standard data set for the interrelated sciences of biology, chemistry, and hydrography, which serves as a foundational and ongoing reference on the health and productivity of this critical fishery for all those engaged in its maintenance and preservation.
