Excerpt from From the Pulpit to the Poor-House: And Other Romances of the Methodist Itinerancy
House is a romance from real life. The line between fact and fiction can be drawn with difficulty by the author. It was first used as a sermon in the Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church, Providence, R. I. It was then rewritten and re vised, and was used as an address at conventions and Annual Conferences. It awakened, such deep interest that requests for its publication came from every part of the country. Many ministers solicited permission to use it as an aid in call ing the attention of the Church to the needs of the veterans of Methodism. It now goes forth accom panied by other story-sermons of a kindred character. This attempt at preaching by making believe is a humble effort to imitate teaching by parable. If the thousands who may read will be as greatly inter osted as the thousands who have heard, no one will.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a powerful sermon on the plight of veteran Methodist ministers who, after a life of service to the Church, were left in poverty and despair. The author, a former Methodist minister, draws upon his own experiences and those of his colleagues to expose the systemic neglect that led to the destitution of so many. The book reveals the financial struggles and social isolation faced by superannuated ministers, who were often cast aside once they were no longer able to perform their duties. The author argues that this neglect was not only a moral failing but also a betrayal of the Church's mission to care for its own. Through poignant anecdotes and historical research, this book sheds light on a forgotten chapter in Methodist history. It challenges readers to confront the Church's responsibility to provide for its aging ministers and offers a powerful indictment of the institutionalized mistreatment of those who have dedicated their lives to serving others.
