N 1886 dr. Daniel stevenson, then president of Augusta College, came to Barbourville to investigate the possibility of the purchase of Union College. Dr. Stevenson succeeded in buying it for the Board of Education of the Kentucky Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was selected as its firsr president under the new regime. Dr. Stevenson worked indefatigably in building Union College, carry ing the burden borh of finance and student promotion. Through it all he succeeded in giving the college a good start and in inspiring the leaders who followed him in the work of the college after his death in January, 1897. To Dr. Stevenson Union owes her rebirth and her early success.
