The Lower Platte suh-ba31n covers a gross area of obout square miles. Most of this land is in private ownership. The relatively insignificant cmount of public domain acres) is scattered through out tho area in small isolated tracts. Some of these tracts are located along the main stem of the Vissouri River and others are Situated along certain of the tributary streams. Such tracts (totaling acres) may be involved in the proposed irrigation and flood-oontrol progrcms of the sub-basin and thus may be useful to the prosecution of those programs. Therefore, it is believed to be in the public interest to hold these tracts in status quo pending determination of their need for such public purposes. The remainder of the public domain in this area (totcling about acres) likewise is in small isolated tracts scattered Widely over the area. However, this lettcr acreage is so Situated as to be of no influence or importance to future stream development programs. It contains no minerals or timber and can be used and managed effectively only in connection with adgaecnt lends. In effect the settlement, dlsosc1 and private acquisition of land in Nebraska through the years has created an enclave as to those remaining public domain lends.
