Brigade. - Any division of an army commanded by a brigadier.
Cabinet. - The Select or secret council of a prince, or Executive Govern ment so called from the apartment in which it was originally held.
Campaign. - The time that an army keeps the field, either in action, in marches, or in camp, without going into winter-quarters.
Capitulation. - Commonly used in military language to signify the act of surrendering to an enemy upon stipulated terms, in opposition to surren derin g at discretion.
Charter. - A written instrument, executed with usual forms, given as evidence of a grant or contract. The charters, under which most of the colo nies were settled, were given by the king, and incorporated certain persons, with power to hold lands granted, to establish a government, and make laws for their own regulation. These were called Charter Governments.
