Tour a tour poete, romancier et critique, Paul Bourget influence de facon durable les lettres francaises au lendemain de l'ere naturaliste. Il publie trois recueils de vers entre 1875 et 1882. Un an plus tard, ses Essais de psychologie contemporaine, dans lesquels il se livre a une analyse fouillee des ecrivains qui le subjuguent (Renan, Baudelaire, Flaubert, Stendhal) font de lui un pilier de la critique litteraire. Puis il choisit d'ecrire des romans. Avec Cruelle enigme (1885), Andre Cornelis (1887), et surtout Le Disciple, (1888), il devient maitre du roman psychologique. Son retour au catholicisme au debut du XXeme siecle donne une nouvelle orientation a ses ecrits, qui se teintent de moralisme.
