Bernadau est un homme de la Révolution. Il l'a vécue tout entière. Il est né à Bordeaux en 1762, pour n'y mourir qu'en 1852, et encore d'accident. Il a vu défiler devant lui les régimes et il s'est adapté à chacun aussi bien qu'il a pu. Avocat - clerc sous l'ancien régime, homme public sous la Révolution, il devint archiviste et professeur d'histoire de Bordeaux sous le Consulat, suppléant de juge de paix et commissaire de police sous l'empire. Quand la seconde République eut succédé à la Restauration, il réserva les forces qui lui restaient pour terminer ses travaux d'histoire, et il ne parut plus en public que pour les distributions de prix. Au total, c'est au moment de la Révolution qu'il vécut ses plus belles années; la Révolution occupe ainsi le centre de sa vie.
