L'auteur des précieux mémoires dont nous donnons ici la première édition complète, edmond-jean - François Barbier, naquit à Paris dans la rue Galande, près la place Maubert, le 16janvier 1689. Son père et son grand-père avaient été avo cats au parlement, et il fut destiné par sa famille à suivre la même carrière. Le 30 juillet 1708 (il avait à peine alors dix neuf ans etdemi), il se fit inscrire au tableau de l'ordre mais il ne plaida jamais, et resta toute sa vie avocat consultant. Cette profession, différente au dix - huitième siècle de ce qu'elle est de nos jours, était une espèce d'agence d'affaires, qui créait à celui qui la remplissait de nombreuses relations, et le mettait par cela même en mesure de recueillir une foule de faits et d'anecdotes, et de se renseigner curieusement sur les hommes et sur les choses. Barbier fut en rapport avec les plus grandes familles; il fréquenta particulièrement d'argen son, les Nicolai, le maréchal de Saxe, et il fut le conseil ler de la princesse de Modène contre le duc d'orléans. Homme d'affaires avant tout, occupé du soin de vivre à l'aise, et parfaitement indifférent aux passions qui s'agitaient autour de lui, mais doué d'un esprit juste et positif, indulgent pour les plaisirs faciles dont il prenait largement sa part, mais inflexible sur toutes les questions qui touchaient àla probité; ami tout à la fois du parlement et de la royauté, mais ne dissimulant jamais les torts de quelque part qu'ils vinssent.
