Qu'il faille en gémir ou s'en féliciter, mes écrits ont teint de leur couleur grand nombre des écrits de mon temps. Mon nom depuis vingt - cinq années, se trouve mêlé aux mouvements de l'ordre social il s'attache au règne de Buonaparte, au rétablisse ment des autels, à celui de la monarchie légitime, à la fondation de la monarchie constitutionnelle. Les uns repoussent ma personne, mais prêchent mes doctrines, et s'emparent de ma politique en la dénaturant; les autres s'arrangeroient de ma per sonne si je consentois à la séparer de mes principes. Les plus grandes affaires ont passé par mes mains. J'ai connu presque tous les rois, presque tous les hommes, ministres ou autres, qui ont joué un rôle de mon temps. Présenté à Louis XVI, j'ai vu Washington au début de ma carriere, et je suis retombé à la fin sur ce que je vois aujourd'hui.
Plusieurs fois Buonaparte me menaça de sa colère et de sa puissance, et cependant il étoit entraîné par un secret penchant vers moi, comme je res sentais une involontaire admiration de ce qu'il y avoit de grand en lui. J'aurois tout été dans son gouvernement si je l'avois voulu; mais il m'a tou jours manqué pour réussir une passion et un vice l'ambition et l'hypocrisie.
