Jet is a black labrador trained by her master to be a poacher's dog. When her master is sent to prison, Jet is requisitioned by the army in 1939, and trained as a military dog. Jet survives Dunkirk and the Blitz, but is reunited with the poacher as he lies wounded on the battlefield.

Martin Booth was born in Lancashire but brought up in Hong Kong and Kenya. He describes himself as an inveterate traveller, writing on travel and conservation topics for several newspapers and magazines. His other writing interests include poetry, literary criticism and film and TV writing - particularly wildlife documentaries for the BBC and independent producers. He has also written children's plays for the BBC. Martin now lives in Somerset.
