Synopsis
"Holy Cities" is a series which examines the importance and significance of some of the main religious centres of the world. The books explore each city through those features which make up its unique identity and character. It is the duty of all Muslims to try, at least once in their lives, to make a pilgrimage to Mecca. This book charts the development of Mecca as the most holy city for the world's community of Muslims, and explains the history of Islam itself. Illustrated throughout with maps, diagrams and colour photographs, some especially taken for the book, there are questions and projects for children to try at home or in the classroom, and unusual or difficult words are explained in key word glossaries on each spread. A further reading list is included.
